For a year now, on a Wednesday afternoon, I have been supporting two people, Paul and Bernard to go to a great venue called "Place in the Park". The two men only knew one another a little, as they actually live in different areas with different circles of support and used to seldom spend time together. However they both like playing pool.
During our Wednesday visits, I act as the "go between" trying to be as facilitative as possible to ensure both Bernard and Paul get the most out of their time together; enjoying their game of pool and developing their friendship. They also play Bingo and have had the occasional outing together, to Conway, Llandudno and Bury market, but it’s the games of pool that are their main enjoyment. As a Support Worker I get great satisfaction facilitating this activity and observing how my own interactions with Paul and Bernard reflect positively and improve their interactions with each other, as they play pool together.
I observe the sharing of smiles and happy conversation as they enjoy a friendly but competitive game. Paul now and then looks over to me, giving me the "Thumbs Up" letting me know he is having a good time.
Watching Bernard and Paul develop their friendship through a shared interest in an activity is so rewarding to me and makes my job one to be proud of.
