On my first day I was reading files in the office of the Coach House when in walked a young man who signed good morning to me perfectly and introduced himself as Scott. Scott then offered to show me around the Coach House and I was struck by how confident he was in the way he communicated with someone he had never met before.
The next day the students went canoeing. Some of the students were a little apprehensive to get into the canoes on the water, but the staff offered constant reassurance and plenty of humour. The trust the students had in the staff to keep them safe was clearly evident and all the students and staff had a wonderful time despite a few getting wet (none more so than our canoe – we managed to fall in the water twice!).
The most humbling part of my short secondment and also the bit that has made me proud to be part of the team at Womaston for this short period, is the dedication the staff have shown to the students since it was announced the school was to close and staff were to be made redundant. The staff constantly put the needs of the students first; working hard to ensure we are getting the next step right for each young person.
It has truly been a fantastic experience working at Womaston and I am grateful to both the staff and the students for making my time there so unforgettable. I wish you all well.
