The team were working to clear some ground at Red House. It was a small group and Kyle was working with people who needed more support than himself and this seemed to give him the feeling that he should try to inspire the rest of the group, and consequently he became more responsive to what was going on.
By carefully using a variety of communication methods, we gave out clear information as to our aims for the day and what was required, making sure everyone understood and responded to let us know whether they were happy with the plan.
Once we started, we created a good atmosphere by making sure there was a fun element to the work by singing and dancing with the tools whilst digging and raking, pretending they were microphones. (Health & Safety is always assured!)
Kyle became very motivated by the way we were working and I suggested to him that we try to move six barrow loads before lunch as it looked like rain. Kyle said ‘let’s do twelve’. Well we managed sixteen!!!
Kyle was supported well by us; we had got it right for him, and this was reflected in his behaviour, and in turn he was supportive and encouraging towards everyone else in the group.
Our challenge is to keep building on this, as it makes such a difference.
