Chris said that he would like to be involved with the running of the café. Chris is part of the independent living group at Swanwick and has had experience of volunteering in a community café in the past.
Rose spent time with Chris working together to create menus and order pads that were accessible to him.
Chris informed Rose that he wanted a cash till, as this would make it easier for him to total the bills up. Together they found a till that was suitable. Chris had gained experience of using a till when he was attending his previous service, with MacIntyre.
Rose suggested to Chris that he join the “count me in” group to gain confidence with his money skills and he has now also completed a basic food hygiene course.
As the opening day approached we had a “dummy run” and we all posed as customers. Chris was obviously nervous and looked to Rose for support and encouragement, which she gave. However Rose knew Chris could do this and carefully stepped back when Chris didn’t need her.
Later that day Chris and Rose spent time together reflecting on what had gone well and what concerns Chris had. These were mainly around Chris’ confidence when dealing with the public. Rose reassured Chris that she would be there to support him, when he felt he needed her.
The opening day arrived and together Chris and Rose set out the café. Chris had brought in his uniform, consisting of black trousers and a pristinely ironed shirt. As the customers arrived Chris began to relax and started to gain eye contact with people, and Rose carefully offered encouragement and guidance when needed. By the end of the afternoon Chris had a huge smile on his face and said that he had really enjoyed the experience.
The café has been open for 4 weeks and Chris now sets up the café and has encouraged other people to become involved too. His confidence and pride in his appearance has increased significantly and he clearly enjoys interacting with the customers. And Rose? Well, she is still on hand if needed, but Chris’ need for support is reducing week by week.
Last week Chris attended a First Aid course with the staff team. He stated that he now knows what to do should any of his customers need help!
