Steve had been telling Great Holm staff that he wanted to visit Beanhill, but the staff couldn’t work out why. Although the Learning Centre had recently moved from CMK to Beanhill, nobody could work out why Steve was so keen to go there. However the team listened to Steve and realised this was important to him, so Clive drove him to Beanhill. When they arrived at Beanhill, Steve was out of the car like a shot and as soon as he saw me through the windows he started to wave and said ‘Got something for you’. I signed ‘Me?’ He grinned and I quickly went to the door and let him in. Steve said ‘I have made something for you’. He then hugged me and said that he had missed me. Steve put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a mayor type chain pendant that he had made especially for me. I was thrilled. |
It’s taken me a long time to get to know Steve, as he is quite shy, and needs a lot of time to trust people and build relationships, but we’ve taken it at his pace and now get on very well. I feel honoured that I have his trust.
I put my new pendant on and we took some photos. Steve was very happy that I loved it and even more delighted that I wanted to show it to everyone. Clive walked in and said that it all made sense now. Steve had been adamant that he wanted to come over to Beanhill. It made sense that he wanted to deliver the pendant. I later took Steve to show the pendant to the college art Tutor. I had to encourage and reassure Steve that she would love to meet him, as he’s really not confident with people he doesn’t know well. However it was well worth the visit as Sarah had been thinking about what could be done for the jubilee celebration and Steve had brought a great idea. She told Steve ‘you have inspired me’. Steve kind of pulled himself up tall, smiled and looked so delighted again. |
