Ben loves DIY in any way, shape or form. He wants to buy a shed for his garden where he could keep all his tools and work on his projects. Ben’s skills are now so well known in the area that people ask him for help. He (amongst other things) helped with moving the furniture at Hubbard Close, cleaned the buses at The Grove and even repaired his neighbour’s fence! Ben regularly bakes cakes and shares them with all his friends and the shop keepers at Brookes Road. He also makes coffee for the builders who are working on two new bungalows behind his house. Ben’s happiest day was when the builders let him have a go on the digger.
It is really rewarding to see how Ben has grown over the past 7 months. He really is a part of the local community. But Ben’s got even bigger plans. He now wants to get a proper job and we are supporting him with this. He is going to try working in the coffee shop in Stony Stratford first to try what a real job is like.
Ben is on a long journey towards independence and is doing really well. But it doesn’t mean that it’s always been easy. Ben is lucky that his staff not only listen to him and reflect but are creative enough to find ways forward. Ben is a very proud owner of a hammer drill and an electric sander. He likes to help people move furniture or take their rubbish to local recycling centre. He does all the things we do and it is great to see that staff are supporting him to do all these activities safely, instead of telling him “You can’t do that. It’s too dangerous!” Because as one saying goes: “If you never take risks in life, you'll never see anything new!”
